Tariff and charging
Q1.
What kind of browsing service is available to smartphones using BlackBerry 6/7 OS? How is it charged locally and internationally?

A single browser is available on BlackBerry 6/7 OS smartphones. Browsing will be charged according to content type and user location.

a) Browsing Internet locally in HK

  • With the exception of media streaming, browsing entails email data usage and will be deducted from your package until individual plan limits are reached, after which thereafter charges will be incurred.


b) Browsing Internet while roaming

  • Charges will be made at roaming GPRS rates.


c) Browsing Internet via PCCW Wi-Fi hotspots

  • Internet access can be performed at PCCW Wi-Fi hotspots* at no additional charge.
    *Customer must subscribe to PCCW Wi-Fi service and use a BlackBerry smartphone that supports Wi-Fi.


d) Browsing Infotainment service content (m.pccw-hkt.com) in HK (WAP browser is not available in BlackBerry 6/7 OS smartphones)

  • No GPRS charge in HK.


e) Browsing Infotainment service content (m.pccw-hkt.com) while roaming

  • Charges will be made at roaming GPRS rates.

What kind of browsing service is available to smartphones using BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or earlier versions? How is it charged locally and internationally?

Four browsers are available for BlackBerry device software 5.0 or earlier. Browsing will be charged according to user content type, browser type and location.

a) BlackBerry browser

  • With the exception of media streaming, accessing Internet and intranet via BES server entails email data usage and will be deducted from your package until individual plan limits are reached, after which thereafter charges will be incurred.


b) Internet browser

  • With the exception of media streaming, browsing the Internet entails email data usage and will be deducted from your package until individual plan limits are reached, after which thereafter charges will be incurred.


c) Wi-Fi browser

  • Internet access can be performed at PCCW Wi-Fi hotspots* at no additional charge.
    *Customer must subscribe to PCCW Wi-Fi service and use a BlackBerry smartphone that supports Wi-Fi.


d) WAP browser

  • Accessing the Internet will incur GPRS charges^.
  • 2G BlackBerry users browsing Infotainment service content (m.pccw-hkt.com) will incur GPRS charges^.
  • 3G BlackBerry users browsing Infotainment service content (m.pccw-hkt.com) will incur no extra GPRS charge.

How is media streaming charged?

A GPRS charge will be incurred for all kinds of media streaming, including video and audio streaming (applicable to all browsers). Local or roaming GPRS rates^ will be applied according to user location.

 
Q4.
Does my plan's email data usage cover uploading and downloading files via the Internet?
  • Uploading/downloading files locally entails email data usage and will be deducted from your package until individual plan limits are reached, after which thereafter charges will be incurred.
  • GPRS charges^ may be incurred if a third-party application downloaded from BlackBerry App World is used.
 
Q5.
If I do not open an email, will I still be charged on the basis of email data?

Yes. You will be charged on the basis of 2KB/email (or more for HTML emails) even if you do not open an email.

What's the charge for using the BlackBerry smartphone as a modem?

Q7.
What data type does BlackBerry Messenger consume? Can I use it with another operator? Does it work while roaming?

BlackBerry Messenger consumes email data.
Communication takes place from PIN to PIN, so this is not operator-specific.
This can be used while roaming.

 
Q8.
Will I be charged for downloading and using applications from BlackBerry App World?

Downloading/using applications from BlackBerry App World entails GPRS usage and will be deducted from your GPRS package subscription or billed as a thereafter charge^.

How frequently is BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) email retrieved?

Yahoo, Gmail, AOL and Hotmail MSN email is updated instantly, while other POP3/IMAP4 accounts are refreshed every 15 minutes.

 
Q4.
Can I add company email on my BIS account?

This depends on email type. You can add up to 10 personal accounts – eg POP3 or IMAP. If your company email server is hosted by an ISP, you could also add a BIS account.
If you’re using Microsoft Exchange, Groupwise or Lotus email, you need to apply for a BES account from our corporate sales.

Roaming service
Q1.
If a customer uses Wi-Fi while roaming, does sending and receiving email count as email data?

This would count only as Wi-Fi usage. Remarks: As BlackBerry activates both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity at the same time, the handset will use 3G data before finding and logging on to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

 
Q2.
Is it possible to bar roaming email service while traveling overseas?

Yes.
Options Mobile Network Data Service Off When roaming.
Users can only make and receive voice calls while roaming.

Q1.
Can the BlackBerry act as a modem? If so, what is the charging system?

Yes. Modem charges are the same as for GPRS data. For details on getting set up, please refer to section 5.0 of BlackBerry service user guide.

What kind of media format is supported by BlackBerry?

Video format supported by BlackBerry® BoldTM: DivX 4, DivX 5/6 partially supported, XviD partially supported, H.263, H.264 and WMV3.
Audio format supported: .3gp, MP3, WMA9 (.wma/.asf), WMA9 Pro/WMA 10, MIDI, AMR-NB and Professional AAC/AAC+/eAAC+.

Do BlackBerry handsets offer a video-call function?

How do I set up a Wi-Fi browser?
  • Choose Options Advanced Options Choose Browser  Set default browser as Hotspot Browser.
  • Choose Manage Connections Wi-Fi Options   Set Wi-Fi selection mode as Automatic.
  • Choose Manage Connections Set up Wi-Fi network Scan For Networks Find “PCCW1x” Set security type as “EAP-SIM” and save.

Does the BlackBerry handset support Chinese, Japanese and Korean read-and-input functions?

For Chinese: Handheld software 4.2.2 or more recent supports rendering and input.

For Japanese: Handheld software 4.2.1 or more recent supports rendering only, while 4.6.0 or more recent supports rendering and input (applicable to handsets with full QWERTY keyboard).

For Korean: Handheld software 4.2.1 or more recent supports rendering only, while 4.5.0 or above supports rendering and input (applicable to handsets with full QWERTY keyboard).

How come the battery of my BlackBerry is always low on power?

Using Wi-Fi and IM for applications such as MSN or video streaming consumes a lot of power, so please turn these functions off, if not in use.
To shut off video streaming, please select the square “STOP“ button or choose “Close” from the menu
